DISCOVER the arctic

Get Up Close

With the sun casting its warm glow on the icy waters and chunks of bluish ice, the early dawn provides a dramatic backdrop to the polar bear sauntering along the shoreline of Canada’s Hudson Bay.  The air is refreshingly crisp and clean, and I can hear the soft crunch of my boots on the snow, as we slowly and carefully approach the bear, being ever mindful of our guide’s instructions. My adrenaline rush intensifies as our group inches closer for awe-inspiring, eye level views.  The bear pays us no attention and continues to playfully wrestle with a chunk of seaweed, giving us a series of amusing action poses for our quietly clicking cameras.

Like Nowhere Else

Nowhere else on Earth can one walk amongst the great white bears!  Churchill Wild offers three luxury lodge accommodations, all exclusively located in the remote Canadian wilderness.  A variety of set departure itineraries provide for the thrilling opportunity to experience arctic wildlife on foot, including wolves, foxes, moose, black bears, caribou and of course, polar bears. Set sail in the Hudson Bay to experience beluga whales or sip a glass of wine from the coziness of the lodge as you gaze at the beauty of the setting sun over the arctic tundra.  Whether you travel during the summer, fall, or early winter, your senses will be exhilarated by the surrounding landscapes, wildlife encounters, delectable cuisine and perhaps, a display of the dancing Northern Lights.

Mid-July begins the Churchill Wild season with the Birds, Bears and Belugas itinerary providing an exceptional 8-day, 7-night adventure, inclusive of beluga whale watching, experiencing over 100 species of birdlife, as well as summer polar bear viewing, staying at the Seal River Heritage Lodge, nestled along the shoreline of the Hudson Bay.  As summer wildflowers fade, September and October itineraries offer the opportunity for up close viewing of polar bears, moose, foxes and caribou surrounded by a kaleidoscope of fall foliage, with the option of a 10-night Dual Lodge Safari itinerary for an extended arctic exploration.  Early winter brings the beauty of freshly fallen snow and polar bears anxiously awaiting the freezing of the ice where they will further explore and hunt for the remainder of winter.  Travel in November on the Polar Bear Photo Safari itinerary, choosing one of two lodges, for 7-days, 6-nights to behold the classic vista, polar bears blanketed by the white tundra.  This itinerary is especially suited for the aspiring amateur and professional photographer, with activities focused around capturing wildlife images in the best morning and evening light.  (Meals are delayed if the polar bear or wildlife action is too good to stop your camera’s shutter!)  Nightly opportunities to shoot the Northern Lights make this a photographer’s dream arctic itinerary.
